Jeanette Mundt and Leonie Radine: I’d Like to Hold Her Head Under Water (in English)

Thursday, January 30, 2020, 7 pm

Artist Jeanette Mundt and curator Leonie Radine (Museum Ludwig) talk about Mundt’s work, Lana Del Rey, and the violence of ultra beauty.

The singer and artist persona Lana Del Rey is known for her nostalgic recourses to American cultural history. In her songs and videos, she plays on American dreams and complexes as well as the pop-cultural construction of femininity. Brilliantly camouflaged in forests of quotations and flattering surfaces of artificiality, Del Rey invites us to get lost in her bittersweet melancholy. But when the mirror she holds up to us threatens to shatter, this pleasure can also turn painful. How the ideas encapsulated in the songs and persona of Del Rey relate to Jeanette Mundt’s artistic practice will be discussed through selected works and collaborations.

Jeanette Mundt, whose work includes paintings as well as drawings, videos, poetry, and installations, was born in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1982, grew up in Zurich, and now lives in New York. Her work was most recently shown at the Whitney Biennial 2019 in New York. Recent solo exhibitions include Overduin & Co, Los Angeles; Societé, Berlin; Bridget Donahue and Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, together with works by Ned Vena, New York. Recent group exhibitions include Lisson Gallery, New York; Galerie Neu, Berlin; Greene Naftali and Matthew Marks, New York.

Leonie Radine has worked at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne since 2015, where she curated two group exhibitions in the series HERE AND NOW at Museum Ludwig: Transcorporealities and Home Visit. As curatorial project manager and assistant to director and curator Yilmaz Dziewior, Radine was involved in solo exhibitions by Wade Guyton (currently running until March 1, 2020), Haegue Yang, Trisha Donnelly, Heimo Zobernig, Joan Mitchell, and Danh Vō, as well as the anniversary exhibition We Call It Ludwig. Previously, she worked as a curatorial assistant to Susanne Pfeffer at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin. She studied art history in Marburg and Berlin.
