Quinn Latimer: Hearing Is a Way of Touching at a Distance – On Some Speculative Works by Rachel Rose

In this lecture, adapted from her recent essay on Rachel Rose, writer Quinn Latimer considers some of the speculative dimensions of Rose’s work. Cosmos, colony, and childhood; reproduction, repetition, and narrative: the various subjects and points of contact in Rose’s moving-image and sculptural oeuvre constellate into immersive explorations of sound, image, and object in which the process of exploration itself—with all of its colonial-cosmological problematics—seems to be the point. In her talk, Latimer explores the artist’s emphasis on the audible, which suggests R. Murray Schafer’s famous lines from The Tuning of the World (1977): “Hearing is a way of touching at a distance. …. I am going to treat the world as a macrocosmic musical composition.” 

Quinn Latimer is a California-born writer and editor. Her books include Like a Woman: Essays, Readings, Poems (Sternberg Press, 2017), Sarah Lucas: Describe This Distance (Mousse Publishing, 2013), and Film as a Form of Writing: Quinn Latimer Talks to Akram Zaatari (Wiels, 2013). Her writings and readings have been featured widely, including at REDCAT, Los Angeles; Chisenhale Gallery, London; the Venice Architecture Biennale; and Sharjah Biennial 13. She is also the editor of many books, including Simone Forti: The Bear in the Mirror (Walther König, 2019), with Roos Gortzak; and Stories, Myths, Ironies, and Other Songs: Conceived, Directed, Edited, and Produced by M. Auder (Sternberg Press, 2014), with Adam Szymczyk. She is currently guest faculty at Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK), and, together with Chus Martínez, she is working on a new research project at Institut Kunst, Basel, that considers questions of gender, power, aesthetics, and language. Latimer was editor-in-chief of publications for documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel.
