Concert: Song recital “Painting with sound” in cooperation with the Staatstheater Kassel

Sunday, May 26, 2024, 7.30 pm – 9 pm

Synesthesia, meaning the interlinking between different senses of perception, has been a central reference point in music for centuries. At the song recital, coloratura soprano Marie-Dominique Ryckmanns and pianist Felix Barsky create an intimate program associatively harmonized with the exhibitions of the Fridericianum. In immediate reaction to the spatial setting, the selected songs by, among others, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Clara Schumann, Amy Beach, Hugo Wolf, and Arnold Schönberg can be perceived in new, maybe unexpected ways, and substantiate with their infinite tonalities that the origin of “coloratura” – a term describing a certain sound sequence in singing – lies in the Latin word for colors.

The German-French lyric coloratura soprano Marie-Dominique Ryckmanns studied singing at the Mozarteum Salzburg and graduated with distinction. From 2020 to 2022, she was a member of the International Opera Studio at the Hamburg State Opera, where she made her debut under Kent Nagano. In the film format Graphic Opera Weiße Rose, she played the leading role of Sophie Scholl, project partners were the culture-centered broadcast channel ARTE and the Federal Agency for Civic Education. She appeared as a guest soloist at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Hamburg State Opera and the Staatstheater Nürnberg, among others. Since the 2023/2024 season, she has been a soloist in the ensemble of the Staatstheater Kassel.

Felix Barsky, born in Russia into a family of musicians, studied music theory and music history at the Moscow Conservatory from 2010 to 2014, where he took conducting lessons with Stanislav Diatchenko and attended the conducting class of Gennady Rozhdestvensky. He then studied conducting at the MUK Vienna with Andreas Stoehr, Guido Mancusi and Gerrit Prießnitz until 2020 and took part in a master class with Mikhail Jurowski. During his studies, Barsky already had engagements at various festivals and concerts, including at the Arnold Schönberg Center, with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, as well as regular productions of contemporary music. Felix Barsky was musical director of Offenbach’s Die Schäfer and Ein Ehemann von der Tür in Bad Ems and assisted at the Kufstein Operetta Summer (Die Fledermaus) and the Langenlois Castle Festival (Die Fledermaus and Richard Heuberger’s Der Opernball). He also conducted the vocal ensemble Hietzsingers from 2017 to 2019. He regularly gives concerts with soloists from the Vienna State Opera, the Theater an der Wien, the Landestheater Linz, the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Volksoper Wien. From January 2022, Felix Barsky was solo repetiteur with conducting duties at Theater Hagen, before being engaged as repetiteur at Staatstheater Kassel in the beginning of 2023.
