Guided tour by Pernilla Wiik: A Passage Through Ulla Wiggen’s Oeuvre

Thursday, Jun 27, 2024, 7 pm – 8.30 pm

During her tour through Ulla Wiggen’s exhibition OUTSIDE / INSIDE at the Fridericianum, art historian and curator Pernilla Wiik explores the works of the internationally acclaimed Swedish artist. Focus lies on the curatorial aspects and the potential differences between the current exhibition at the Fridericianum and the upcoming show Ulla Wiggen: Passage at EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art in Finland curated by Wiik. Furthermore, she discusses the artist’s oeuvre within a Nordic framework.

Showcasing works from a career spanning over 60 years, the exhibition in Finland marks the most extensive showing of the artist´s oeuvre ever seen in the Nordic countries. The curatorial focus is on the characteristics of Ulla Wiggen’s artistry: the surprising transitions from one theme to another and the passages, as the gaze focuses on something inside the depicted object and then moves outward again.

Pernilla Wiik is Curator of Exhibitions at EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Finland, where she works closely with contemporary artists, curating and leading both Finnish and international exhibitions. With an intense commitment to fostering creative expression, Wiik bridges the gap between contemporary art and diverse audiences. Her curatorial work is characterized by a strong dialogue with artists, a deep interest in the art-making process, and spatial solutions that contribute to an inclusive experience. Over the years, Pernilla Wiik has successfully curated numerous exhibitions, creating dynamic spaces that encourage dialogue and engagement, the latest being Ulla Wiggen: Passage, which opens at EMMA in September 2024. Wiik holds a Master of Arts in art history, specializing in Nordic modern art from the early 20th century. For the past 25 years, she has focused on contemporary art and design working at several cultural institutions both in Finland and Sweden.
