Kasseler Museumsnacht 2024

Saturday, Sep 7, 2024 – Sunday, Sep 8, 2024, 5 pm – 1 am

The Fridericianum is delighted to be part of the Kasseler Museumsnacht again this year and will along with some 50 other cultural venues remain open until well into the night. And there’s a lot for you to discover: Melvin Edwards’ extraordinary art, the largest frog in Kassel, or how to design your own bags and masks in our Studiowerkstatt, not to forget plenty of music and great snacks and drinks! Added to which, the documenta archive is guesting at Fridericianum with a discussion and film program.

Moreover, there will be one Arabic and one English guided tour.

Using techniques such as cutting, drawing, gluing, and spraying, you can make your own frog masks, or bags in the style of Melvin Edwards’ works on paper.
No registration required. Age 5 years and upwards. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The number of places is limited.

Discovery game: Check die Museen! Expedition zur Kasseler Museumsnacht
Available from 5–9 pm
This year, the Museumsnacht has an extra special offer for primary-school kids: In various exhibition venues, they can grab a copy of the booklet Check die Museen! Expedition zur Kasseler Museumsnacht for free. It invites everyone interested to embark on an exciting game tour round the participating museums – including the Fridericianum! Naturally, there’s a reward awaiting all those who solve the exciting tasks. The booklet was jointly developed by the Kulturamt Kassel and art educators from the following institutions: Museum für Sepulkralkultur, GRIMMWELT Kassel, Neue Galerie, Hessisches Landesmuseum, Spohr- Museum, Naturkundemuseum, Fridericianum, and the Stadtmuseum Kassel.

The documenta archiv guesting at Fridericianum: Doppelte Befragung der Realität – Die documenta 5 im geteilten Deutschland
5–6.45 pm
On the occasion of the Kasseler Museumsnacht, the documenta archiv is guesting in the Fridericianum event room, inviting everyone interested to a time travel through art and media history to the city of Kassel in 1972: two television documentaries from the two German states offer special insights into the legendary documenta 5 by Swiss curator Harald Szeemann. The perspectives could hardly be more different: While the West German broadcaster presents the hectic preparations for the documenta, the film team from the GDR takes the “bourgeois art world” and the art market into the crossfire of imperialist criticism in its review. Skepticism is voiced on both sides of the Iron Curtain.
Introduction by cultural scientist Alexia Pooth, author of the book Exhibition Politics. Die documenta und die DDR, published as part of the Schriftenreihe des documenta archivs (2024)
The films:
Befragung der Realität. Dokumente zur documenta 5, West Germany (1972); 44 mins, director: Johannes Freisel, WDR – West German TV
Der goldene Strich. Bilder vom bürgerlichen Kunstbetrieb, East Germany (1974); 26 mins, director: Peter Voigt, Studio H & S
