Raphaela Vogel: “Invitation to Documenta 15 2022”

Friday, Jan 1, 2021 – Sunday, Jan 10, 2021

Artists have repeatedly inserted themselves into the canon of art and exhibition history, be it as a group, as in the case of the Paris Salon des Refusés, or single-handed, like Martin Kippenberger, who in 1996 posed in front of the German Pavilion in Venice. Conversely, artists have also refused to participate in shows, establishing a place in art history that way instead. Kai Althoff’s letter to the artistic director of dOCUMENTA(13), Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, is a prime example of this. But how to respond if one is sent an official invitation to participate in an exhibition that subsequently turns out to be a hoax initiated by third parties? In her short film Invitation to Documenta 15 2022, Raphaela Vogel counters such an invite and has her poodle Rollo make a statement on her behalf.

Raphaela Vogel was born in Nuremberg in 1988. She lives and works in Berlin. Her most recent solo exhibitions were i.a. at Neues Museum Nürnberg (2020), Haus der Kunst München and Kunsthaus Bregenz (2019).
