    In der Reihe der Interventionen präsentiert das Fridericianum die Arbeit MIMIKRY von Kerstin Brätsch. Die komplexe, raumgreifende Installation wurde von der in Hamburg geborenen Künstlerin eigens für die Rotunde im Zentrum der Kunsthalle entwickelt und bildet den neuen Rahmen des dort befindlichen Cafés. Sie schließt unmittelbar an jene Cafégestaltungen an, die Brätsch 2019 im Museum of Modern Art in New York sowie 2021 in der LUMA Foundation in Arles realisierte. 
    MIMIKRY reflektiert einen Teil der Erdgeschichte, der den in ihren Dimensionen kaum fassbaren Kontext des menschlichen Daseins bildet. Gesteine, Sedimente und Fossilien werden in Form von Wandtapeten, Fenstervorhängen, lichtdurchlässigen Raumteilern und skulpturalen Tischen zu einem funktionalen Teil des Caféinterieurs. Das Vergangene zieht sich in die Gegenwart – ein Eindruck, der durch zahlreiche Darstellungen von lebendigen Dinosauriern noch verstärkt wird. Zu der Vergangenheit, deren Ablagerungen Brätsch in ihrem Werk mit zeitgenössischen Materialien rekonstruiert, zählen die Urzeiten des Planeten ebenso wie die Werkgeschichte der Künstlerin. Auch der Titel der Arbeit greift diese Verschränkung auf. Mimikry bezeichnet die Nachahmung optischer, akustischer oder auf den Geruchssinn abzielender Signale von Lebewesen, um andere Lebewesen zugunsten des eigenen Überlebens zu täuschen. In MIMIKRY vollzieht die Künstlerin diesen Prozess bildlich an sich selbst. Die Muster, Ornamente und Oberflächenstrukturen der Installation zitieren frühere Arbeiten, die selbst Nachahmung zum Thema haben. Einerseits handelt es sich dabei um die Marmorierungen der Werkgruppe Unstable Talismanic Renderings (seit 2014), die unter anderem Gesteinsformationen vortäuschen. Andererseits sind die polymorphen Tischplatten aus Kunststein, die auf bunt schillernden Beinen ruhen, mit pinselstrichartigen Motiven aus der seit 2017 entstehenden Serie Fossil Psychics (Stucco Marmo) bedruckt. Im Spiel mit Imitation, Materialien unterschiedlichster Qualität sowie diversen Herstellungsverfahren „sedimentiert“ Brätsch ihre malerische Praxis und erprobt künstlerische Überlebensstrategien. An der Grenze von Kunst und funktionsorientiertem Design begegnet sie den Betrachter*innen augenzwinkernd als überaus gegenwärtige Dinosaurierin. So lädt MIMIKRY kleine und große Besucher*innen nicht allein zum Verweilen ein. Die Arbeit regt ebenso zu einer ungewohnten Auseinandersetzung mit Zeit und Zeitlichkeit sowie mit kunsttheoretischen Fragestellungen an.

    Verlängerung des Vertrags von Moritz Wesseler als Direktor des Fridericianum

    Die documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH freut sich bekanntgeben zu können, dass der Vertrag von Moritz Wesseler als Direktor für das Fridericianum von ihrem Aufsichtsrat bis 2027 verlängert wurde.

    Seit 2019 präsentiert Wesseler in Kassel vielbeachtete Einzelausstellungen von Künstler*innen, denen in Deutschland im institutionellen Kontext bislang noch keine breite Plattform geboten wurde – wie Ron Nagle, Rachel Rose oder Tarek Atoui. Mit diesem spezifischen Fokus festigt und verfeinert er den Status der nordhessischen Metropole als Ort der künstlerisch-kreativen Innovation und des Experiments.

    Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt seiner Aktivitäten liegt auf der Erarbeitung und Umsetzung von retrospektiv angelegten Ausstellungen zu historischen Positionen. So wurde mit der bis dato umfassendsten Schau zum Schaffen des „visionären Malers“ Forrest Bess eine Position präsentiert, die für zahlreiche Kunstschaffende wie auch für die drängenden gesellschaftspolitischen Diskurse der Gegenwart von großer Relevanz ist.

    Begleitet werden die verschiedenen Ausstellungsprojekte von facettenreichen, auf verschiedene Alters- und Interessensgruppen abgestimmten Vermittlungs- und Veranstaltungsprogrammen. Diese finden sowohl in Form von Führungen, Vorträgen oder Workshops im Fridericianum statt, als auch über Podcasts und Interview- oder Dokumentationsfilme im digitalen Raum. Die Aktivitäten der Institution werden so auf internationaler Ebene noch deutlicher sichtbar gemacht und nachhaltig im Bewusstsein verankert. Ein eindrückliches Beispiel hierfür bot die Illumination des Fridericianum am US-Wahltag 2020 durch die Filmemacherin und Malerin Trisha Baga, die weit über Deutschland hinaus Aufmerksamkeit erfuhr.

    Aktuell präsentiert die Kunsthalle Einzelausstellungen der Künstlerinnen Toba Khedoori und Martine Syms. Für die Zeit nach der documenta fifteen plant Wesseler neben vielfältigen und internationalen Ausstellungen, das Haus wie auch den angrenzenden Friedrichsplatz noch umfassender durch ortspezifische Interventionen wie die sogenannte „grüne Greta“ von Alexandra Bircken zu aktivieren.

    Martine Syms, die 1988 in Los Angeles geboren wurde, hat sich in den letzten Jahren zu einer der zentralen wie auch prägenden Positionen des jüngeren internationalen Kunst- und Kulturdiskurses entwickelt. In ihrer gattungsübergreifenden Praxis, die Film, Fotografie, Installation, Performance und Schriftstellerei umfasst, beschäftigt sich die Künstlerin mit vielfältigen, drängenden Fragestellungen, um neue Perspektiven für das gesellschaftliche Leben zu entwerfen. So befasst sich Syms im Zuge präziser Beobachtungen und fundierter Recherchen mit der Darstellung und Rezeption US-amerikanischer Identitäten und Kulturen, den Theorien und Realitäten des Feminismus, den Bedingungen der zwischenmenschlichen Kommunikation oder dem Einfluss digitaler Medien auf den Alltag. Ihre Arbeit, die sowohl von konzeptuellen als auch von poppigen Ansätzen geprägt ist, zeichnet sich durch einen ausgeprägten Humor aus, ohne jemals an Ernsthaftigkeit und Notwendigkeit einzubüßen.

    In der speziell für Kassel entwickelten und Aphrodite’s Beasts betitelten Ausstellung wird die Praxis der Künstlerin erstmals in Deutschland umfassend vorgestellt. Dabei wird das Grundgerüst der Schau durch drei filmische Arbeiten gebildet, die bisweilen den Charakter von raumgreifenden Installationen aufweisen. Den Anfang markiert das 2020 entstandene Werk Ugly Plymouths. Auf drei großen, an Stangen montierten Flachbildschirmen wird anhand von lapidaren, bisweilen intimen Aufnahmen aus dem Alltag in Los Angeles eine Geschichte erzählt, die mit ihrem Titel eine Formulierung aus dem Gedicht „Hollywood“ des 1925 geborenen und 1986 verstorbenen Beat-Poeten Bob Kaufman aufgreift. Hot Dog, Doobie und Le Que Sabe sinddie Protragonist*innen in Syms’ Stück, die mit ihren Stimmen einzeln oder im Dialog das filmische Material begleiten und von Verabredungen, Versprechen und Versuchungen zeugen. Die Wörter und Sätze verweisen auf Form und Inhalt der Text- und Sprachnachrichten des digitalen Zeitalters, sodass die Möglichkeit und Unmöglichkeit der Kommunikation sowie der sozialen Interaktion offenbar werden. Nicht zuletzt durch die feine Abstimmung von Klang und Bewegtbild und deren Einbettung in einen von rotem Licht durchfluteten Raum weist Ugly Plymouths starkimmersive Qualitäten auf.

    Die 2017 realisierte Arbeit Lesson LXXV entfaltet demgegenüber eine ganz andere Wirkung. Der in einer Endlosschleife präsentierte tonlose Film zeigt die Künstlerin in einem Dreiviertelprofil vor einem schwarzen, neutralen Hintergrund. In der nur wenige Sekunden andauernden Sequenz ist zu sehen, wie Milch große Teile von Syms’ Gesicht, ihren Haaransatz, ihre dünnen Flechtzöpfe sowie ihren mit einem T-Shirt bekleideten Oberkörper bedeckt. Gelegentlich ist das Blinzeln ihrer zu Boden gerichteten Augen auszumachen, während an ihrem Kinn kleinere und größere Tropfen der Gravitation folgen oder sich dieser scheinbar widersetzen. Trotz der kaum merklichen Handlung verbindet sich mit dem Bild eine nicht unerhebliche stille Kraft, die die Anmutung von Heiligenbildern ins Gedächtnis ruft. Den Ausgangspunkt von Lesson LXXV bildet jedoch ein eher weltliches Thema. So nimmt die Künstlerin in der Arbeit auf jene Demonstrationen gegen rassistische Gewalt Bezug, die in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika, aber auch in anderen Teilen der Welt bis heute immer wieder stattfanden. Denn im Rahmen von Protesten gossen sich Beteiligte häufig Milch ins Gesicht, um ihre durch den Einsatz von Tränengas bedingten Schmerzen zu lindern. In dem Werk klingt somit ein hochpolitischer Impetus an, der aufgrund der spezifischen Ausformulierung das Potenzial hat, zu einem zeitlosen Appell an die Menschlichkeit zu avancieren. Gleichzeitig kontextualisiert Syms ihre Arbeit innerhalb der Kunstgeschichte, indem sie den Film auf einem Flachbildschirm präsentiert, der auf der Oberseite eines auf dem Boden platzierten, auf die Minimal Art verweisenden Quaders montiert ist. Dieser ist allerdings – wie die angrenzenden Fenster – in einem Violett gehalten, was nicht nur dem Kanon der prominenten Kunstbewegung der 1960er Jahre entgegenläuft, sondern ebenso auf die Frauenbewegung, auf Alice Walkers 1982 erschienenen Roman Die Farbe Lila sowie auf die vielfältigen Bedeutungen des Tons in der LGBTQIA-Community verweist.

    Ganz ähnlich wie Syms in Lesson LXXV ins Zentrum des Werkes gerückt ist und als Mittlerin einer Botschaft agiert, nimmt sie auch in dem 2021 fertiggestellten Film DED die Rolle der Protagonistin ein. So tritt sie in der rund 16-minütigen als Leinwandprojektion präsentierten Arbeit in Form eines Avatars in Erscheinung, der auf Basis eines 3-D-Scans ihres Körpers erschaffen wurde: Vor dem Hintergrund eines unergründlich weiten, lediglich durch eine Horizontlinie strukturierten Raumes erlebt man, wie Syms einem stetigen Wechsel von Leben und Tod, von Auferstehung und Untergang ausgesetzt ist. Mal stirbt sie infolge einer schwallartigen Entleerung des Magen- oder Speiseröhreninhaltes, mal durch den Einsatz einer Schusswaffe oder eines Messers, mal durch einen Sturz aus großer Höhe oder eine innere Explosion. Immer wieder findet die animierte Figur zum Leben zurück, kommt zu Kräften, steht auf und geht weiter. Begleitet werden die teilweise drastischen Sequenzen von einer mitreißenden popmusikalischen Komposition, bei der Syms’ Gesang metaphernreich die verschiedenen Facetten des Lebens im 21. Jahrhunderts und – damit einhergehend – die elementaren Bedingungen und Fragestellungen der Menschheit umschreibt. Es ertönen die Zeilen MY BEATING HEART genauso wie I´VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU HERE oder I WANT TO GIVE AND RECEIVE.

    Irgendwo zwischen Leben und Tod, Hoffnung und Verzweiflung oder Macht und Ohnmacht evoziert DED ein groteskes, bisweilen surreales Bild, das sicherlich auch die globalen Krisen und Katastrophen der Gegenwart reflektiert. Mit seinen Feststellungen, Fragen, Forderungen und Fantasien markiert das Werk den Schlusspunkt der Ausstellung und bietet einen Anstoß für eine immerwährende Suche. FIND A WAY – liest man dementsprechend sowohl auf einem friesartigen, leuchtenden Banner an der Fassade des Fridericianum als auch auf den Gurtgeflechten der Stühle, die die filmischen Arbeiten von Syms neben einer Gruppe von sechs Fotografien flankieren. Letztere sind durch den ähnlich bewussten, empathischen, manchmal flüchtigen Blick geprägt, der auch das filmische Material des Werkes Ugly Plymouths bestimmt, das den Auftakt der Präsentation bildet.
